Broadhead Number 9

Verse
I was just a young man when I first went to the mine,
I learned to swing a shovel, learned to keep myself alive
Learned the sweat and smoke and dust was more than I could stand,
Learned an honest days work left money in my hand
Chorus
Lay down your shovel  pull up a chair
Gather around me miners For the story that I share
A brother in the darkness, he was a friend of mine,
And how I left him buried in the Brodhead number 9

Most of the workers there seemed to come and go,
But after a while, there was one I got to know.
We would work side by side and pay day we would find,
We’d hauled more ore out then all the rest the mine

A mislaid timber fell one day and pinned him to the ground
I heard a rumble above us, and knew it was coming down.
When he saw a meant to run, he turned a deathly pale,
Said ‘you  may make it out, but I’ll see you one day in hell’

I still go underground almost every day
But no one works besides me, as I toil away.
They all act so smugly with their crosses and their prayers
How many would have done the same, if they’d been standing there.

Daniel in the Lion's Den

If some strange song does catch your ear,
Don’t fall to your knees, don’t bow to your fear.
If they lead you to the ovens and your hands are bound,
It will fire you up and not burn you down

SO string up your lyre, sing us a song,
sing one for the king of Babylon.
Step right up and walk right in,
Like Daniel and the lions in the lion’s den.

There’s writing on the wall, you better look alive
If you believe in credit, then spot me a five
The soundman is drunk, but so is the crowd
It won’t matter much when they turn it up loud

So raise up your glass, sing along
All sing together in Babylon
Two dollar draft, three dollar gin
With Daniel and the lions in the lion’s den

Some kings may rise, and some kings my fall,
The King has got his portrait hanging on the wall
He may be grazing like an ox once he’s paid his toll
Or a nicotine velvet with a rimfire mole

So speak your mind, it won’t do you no harm
When your summed to the court of Babylon
Stay true to the vine, it’ll save your skin
Like Daniel and the lions in the lion’s den

Thel-Lizzy the Pair

Thelonious Benz. He lives with his friends.  They order in, and play the nintendo. They make jokes with lots of innuendo. The fun never ends, Thelonious Benz.

Meticulous Liz, she works in the biz. She used to date a kinda famous drummer. Her cat had that dude pegged for a bummer. But that’s how it is, Meticulous Liz.

But when they meet, it’s a treat. She likes his smile and he thinks she’s sweet. They decide to give it a go. It’s not love at first sight, but it still feels right, cause sometimes you just kinda know.

Thel-lizzy the pair, I’m happy to share. They are getting to know one another. Sometimes he takes his lunch with just her mother. Things are quite fair, Thel-Lizzy the pair.

Thel-lizzy the pair, I’m happy to share. They’ve gotten to know one another. Although he still gets nervous around her brother. Things are quite fair, Thel-Lizzy the pair.

Lay Down Bones

If I had 10 dollars on the day I die
Bury me in a box of knotty pine
Lay down bones the souls gonna rise again
I’ll be rich if I ever get old
Bury me in a casket of silver and gold
Lay down bones the souls gonna rise again

Mathew mark luke and john
Body’s dead but the soul lives on
Lay down bones the souls gonna rise again
Born again brother scream’n like a hound
Hope he gets in right this time around
Lay down bones the souls gonna rise again

If you go to heaven, tell you what to do
Thank St. Peter for what he never knew
Lay down bones the souls gonna rise again
If you go to hell, tell you what to say
Tell ’em you were good most every day
Lay down bones the souls gonna rise again

If I had 10 dollars on the day I die
Bury me in a box of knotty pine
Lay down bones the souls gonna rise again
I’ll be rich if I ever get old
Bury me in a casket of silver and gold
Lay down bones the souls gonna rise again

Lonesome Cowboy

I drive them through the country,
I drive them through the plains.
I drive them through the sunshine,
I drive them through the rain.

Come on fellows hear what I say,
The cowboy’s life is a lonely way.
Tie-yi-yippie-yi-yeh
Out on the lonesome plains.

All of my best friends with me
When I make my rounds.
One of them’s a saddle horse
The other two are hounds

Some folks choose the city life,
Some folks choose the plow.
Some folks get a purty wife,
Some folks get a cow

Say you are a burly man,
Well I’ve known a few
Wipe their arse with prickly pair
And put goatheads in their chew

Hard 52

There’s the saffron Buick he drove off the lot,
It will make it to the bar before the engine gets hot
The ashtray is full and when he drives that car
They blow black smoke and hack up tar

Hard, hard, fifty-two
Skin so thin that the bones show through
Wont crack a smile or shed any tears
For a century of living in fifty -two years

He’s done every job there is to be had
Where the work is hard and the pay is bad
When if times are better, or times are worse
Its whisky not water that will quench his thirst

Hard luck times- a heavy plow
That left furrows deep across his brow
sun and rain,  watch it grow
sandpaper stubble just white as snow

Fare Thee Well, My Broadway

I tell myself, we’ll meet again
I tell myself, to remember back when
With your stage light glow,
we would have stole the show

Now I know
this is the end
May the hearts we’ve won recall us with cheer
May the songs we’ve sung still ring in my ear

Now’s the day
We drift away
Fare thee well,
my broadway

Velvet cloak, fading with time
Royal musk perfume divine
Drop the lights
And set our sights
On opening nights
On down the line

May the hearts we’ve won recall us with cheer
May the songs we’ve sung still ring in my ear
Now’s the day
Fare thee well, my broadway

Outer Dark

Brother, oh brother, what have you done
Went in the woods, carrying our son
Came back alone, carrying our son
Brother, oh brother, what have you done

The Devil and his men come riding from the ground,
There’ll be death and sorrow whenever they’re around
They’ll cut out your soul and burn you to the ground
The Devil and his men come riding from the ground,

God damn you Clark, won’t you cut down those men
Hanging from the tree that grows on your land
They’ve been there for weeks by a rope around their chin
God damn you Clark, please cut down those men

Don’t dig up my grave looking for gold
Leave me to rest just peaceful and cold
You might find something that ain’t fit to be told
Don’t dig up my grave looking for gold

Brother, oh brother, what have you done
Went in the woods, carrying our son
Came back alone, carrying our son
Brother, oh brother, what have you done

Whistlin' Benny

Well this is the story of whistlin’ Ben
Who’d hustle the girls when they walked by him
Out on the corner, where he’d sit
He’d say things inappropriate

Oh whistlin Benny,
Whistle and hollar with a hound dog call
Make all the girls feel dirty and small
Your trying so hard for a date but you never get any,
Whistlin’ Benny

Short gal, tall gal, poor gal, rich
Maybe she’s single or maybe she’s hitched
If she walks by where Ben can see
He’ll critique her anatomy

After school one afternoon
Walkin’ in the son comes Millie-June
But her skies turned gray and dark
When she caught Benny’s lewd remark

Well whistlin’ Ben got a tickle in his throat
His hair grew out to thick fur coat
Ears grew up knocked off his hat
And a tail came out from where he sat

Whistlin’ Ben I have to say
He turned canine that very day
After the change he didn’t stand so big
But instead of a dog he could of been a pig
